The Basics of Logo Design

Many professionals can attest that a good logo design is crucial in branding any business. Commercial companies and non-profit organizations alike try to present their respective corporate images in terms of their own symbolic graphics like logos and other related illustrations. Commercial designers and various types of graphics artist enjoy complete freedom in developing corporate images, with the help of other guidelines like a company's mission and vision.

But logos morphed into recognizable brands that helped increase the popularity and sales of a certain product-from food to clothing to gadgets. It goes without saying that your business can also benefit with the same kind of recognition if you consider a few pointers when creating your own logo design. Just what is a logo design and how does a company go about having one?

A logo is a graphical representation of a business name used to recognize the company upon first glance. Commonly used in letterheads, advertising, and promotional materials, it is a tangible symbol of the business' mission, vision, and purpose. This said, a logo should be carefully planned and thought about as this can be the most recognizable and easily remembered way for any organization.

Before deciding to create a logo design, it would be wise to take a look at other businesses' logos and analyze the rationale why they have designed their logos in such ways. You don't have to look far or search long and hard. Just take a look at the most popular logos around and you will realize how easily recognizable these emblems have become though the years. This same factor should, then, be the first in line when conceptualizing what image to use for your own logo. You should come up with an image that you feel will represent the product or service you are doing, like a car for a car company, a house for a real estate or a unique flower for a flower shop.

The next thing to put conscious effort into is when choosing the colors for the image or images you are going to use. You can decide to play around with colors and have two the three colors in your logo if the image allows it or just stick to one hue that you feel best matches the image you are going to use. You may also want to use certain colors to incorporate the meaning these colors evoke, like red for power or luck, green for harmony, or white for purity.

You can also choose to add tag lines to your logo design with a few words or a simple but catchy phrase. Take the cue from the famous taglines big companies have become identified with. You obviously know it's Nike when you hear the words "Just do it" or visualize Colonel Sanders of KFC (or Kentucky Fried Chicken) when you hear the phrase "finger-lickin' good" in television commercials.

A logo design does more than a mere graphical image that represents a business. It takes any product or service an extra mile ahead from its competitors. With the right emblem or logo, your business can create a corporate identity that can be easily recognized and remembered by your market.
